Pillars of CBT

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapeutic approach widely used to treat a variety of mental disorders, including depression, anxiety, phobias, and eating disorders. Its main pillars and characteristics include:

Cognitive Model: CBT is based on the premise that thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are interconnected. The way a person perceives a situation will directly influence their emotional and behavioral response.

Changing Dysfunctional Thoughts: A central goal of CBT is to identify and modify automatic negative thoughts and cognitive distortions that contribute to emotional distress.

A Wide Range of Effective Techniques: CBT utilizes various techniques to modify dysfunctional behaviors, such as gradual exposure to feared situations, social skills training, and behavioral activation to increase participation in enjoyable and meaningful activities. It also incorporates mindfulness techniques, progressive relaxation, and breathing exercises to alleviate anxiety symptoms, for example.

Structure and Guidance: CBT sessions are generally structured and focused on specific goals. The therapist and client collaborate in defining therapeutic objectives and developing a treatment plan.

Psychoeducation: Engaging the client in understanding their disorder and the therapeutic process is a crucial part of CBT. This helps empower the client and promote self-efficacy. In other words, the participatory and active involvement of the client is central to therapy.

Time-Limited and Problem-Oriented: CBT is typically a short- to medium-term therapy focused on resolving the client’s specific issues. Of course, this depends on each person’s needs, and the duration will be determined by their individual demands and new challenges that arise throughout therapy. However, this approach is characterized by empowering and equipping the client to handle their problems independently.

These pillars make CBT an effective and adaptable approach, widely recognized for its ability to produce significant and lasting changes in patients' lives.
